Pool World Champs, Belgrade 2015

Postby Phantom Menace » Sat Jun 20, 2015 11:44 am

Chris Marshall, New Zealand’s only competing athlete in Belgrade 2015, is returning to the Sport Center Milan Gale Muškatirović on the banks of the Danube River after competing in Belgrade’s last WC competition in 2013. The competition is in an outdoor pool in Belgrade, and 2013 saw athletes battle a heatwave for the first half of the competition, followed by an 18 degree drop in temperature overnight: just before Statics! It also saw remarkable WR’s from Natalia Molchanova (185m DNF, 9:02 STA), and an incredible 281m DYN from Goran Čolak.

Chris will be posting informal blogs on http://www.freediving.co.nz (AIDA NZ rebranded website).

We also have John Wright attending as a judge (which is a first for NZ)

Just the journey to get there is quite something ...

Chris managed a 169m DNF (Dynamic No Fins) effort today. This looks good enough to get him to the A Final (pending protests from others who swam a little further but had surface protocol problems etc.)

Yeah, it is hard on a phone (and tablet). Much easier on a PC. I htink it is something to do with the image behind the words and how it is displayed on a smaller format screen.

I have sent a message to the guys who I think administer the site.

And in last nights DYN heats Chris swam 211m. This put him in the B final for DYN.

it is also worth noting that not that long ago his swim would have been a world record!

Ali,
The site has been adjusted so it should be easier to read on a mobile!

Let me know if this is still an issue (it looks better from my phone now).

Thanks Ali. Chris writes well and has a good take on the event I think.

The Static (STA) heats were yesterday and it is a rest day today. Chris decided not to do STA and have two rest days instead. Points to note that I have picked up from various Facebook posts are:
* longest static ever in a competition (breaking the 10 minute barrier) was 10:07 yesterday by Aleix Segura Vendrell
(World record is 11:35 but that was without the stress of a competition)
* closer to home Amber Bourke of Australia managed a Personal Best STA of 5:30. Chris Marshall coached her. This puts her in the B Final for womens STA

The latest post from Chris provides an insight into the mental game that a freediving competition is. I have only done one comp (a low key depth comp in Lake Pupuke) and so only have limited experience with that side of things but I can definitely relate to his comments about the mental state being a huge factor.

Update: Chris set another Personal Best in the Dynamic No Fins (DNF) last night - 175m.

This puts him in the top seven at the world champs.

He is in the B Final for DYN (Dynamic with fin) tonight. Heres hoping for another PB!
