Kenting, Taiwan June 2013

Postby SonnyL » Tue Jun 18, 2013 12:30 am

Currently, I am in Taiwan for my research. Today, I went diving at the nuclear plant water intake point with my research assistants. The purpose of this dive is to determine if it is a good field location for my experiment end of this year. According to the research scientists, the water flow here is higher than any place around the bay because the nuclear plant is siphoning the water into the plant for cooling purposes. Thus, it creates an artificial high flow environment! The underwater environment is supposedly to be the best around the bay as well because the public are not allowed in here! It is only restricted to certain researchers (in which one of the researchers happen to be my collaborator!).

The only thing I need to worry about - AVOID being pulled into the water intake of the nuclear plant!

Water temperature - 29deg C
Visibility - 20m
Depth - 5 to 10m

What is the critter in the top pic?

And what is the research you are doing?

The first pic is a nudibranch..but I have no idea what species. Maybe someone here more familiar can chip in.

I am researching on microbial communities in the coral mucus layer.

Amazing looking diving. I guess you are going to find the site suitable just to dive it some more?

The local researchers told me the first pic is Jorunna rubescens. And supposedly, it's laying eggs! :P

Looks like a great location. I never really thought of a nuclear plant 'intake'. You just always hear about discharge and waste.

But that spot looks pretty awesome from your photos!

have fun Sonny!
