Scallop Season Opens in Marlborough

Postby Mykl » Tue Jul 15, 2014 11:55 pm

Five divers from the RNZAF Base Woodbourne Dive Club braved the chilly waters of the Queen Charlotte Sound this afternoon to take advantage of the opening day of the scallop season in the Challenger area (15 Jul 14 to 14 Feb 15).
Water temp was 13 degrees and viz was about 4 metres on the bottom. All five of us got our limit of 50 each and while we can take 90mm scallops in the Challenger area, most of the ones in our catch bags were well over 100. Usually the scallops are in pretty poor condition at this stage of the season, but not these ones. It certainly bodes well for the rest of the season.

I'd also go to any lengths just to get me some scallops hah! I'd even dive without a suit on just to have a taste of these sumptuous delights.

Sounds like some nice chubby scallops on the menu down there guys.
I might be tempted to do a fly-dive excursion.

(especially for 50 per day - wow!)

I cant think of anything more relaxing, than being in the downunder, breathing some nice clean fresh filtered 21% nitrox.
