Availability and cost of Nitrox

Postby Cameron_R » Thu Mar 14, 2013 4:36 am

Hey,

Having been out of the country for a short while, I'm wondering what is the availability and cost of Nitrox like in NZ right now?

Can you name shops/charter boats/other who are offering Nitrox and let me know what they are charging?

And, anyone got thoughts on why NZ has been so slow on take up of Nitrox as an option?

Ta!

There are a few shops around Auckland that do it. Global, Dive Centre, A Dive Shop to name a few. Unsure on costs. Dive HQ Whangapraroa/HBC(?) do it for the same prices as air.

For your average Kiwi diver I dont see much advantages for using Nitrox. Most are doing relatively shallow and short scallop and cray dives and probably only one or two a day. NDL's are not really the limiting factor here.

Now its been way to long since I has been up to Tutukaka, but I know in the past getting Nitrox up there was a PITA if not impossible.
This made no sense to me as the Knights are a perfect example of where using nitrox is advantageous.

Of course Northland Dive still do Nitrox and the diving up there also benefits well from Nitrox.

Dive Tutukaka are still air only, however the OceanBlue charter does now have Nitrox available... it costs about $18-20 from memory for fills.

Last time I was up there DT couldnt even do DIN fills

My guess is they dont want their divers doing longer bottom times.

Kevin on Mazurka (Oceanblue Adventures) does nitrox fills, usually around 32% for $20 per day which is excellent value considering you might do four dives in a day.

Dive Tutukaka are charging $20+ per fill which is pretty crazy.

As for the slow uptake in NZ. I would attribute that to the thriftiness of the average Kiwi!
