"Diver dies after boat hits

A diver has died after being hit by a boat propeller in Northland tonight.

Police say the man was struck by a commercial boat after he had surfaced near the Poor Knights Islands.

He was taken on board bleeding, with serious facial injuries, but still conscious. However, he died soon after.

Coastguard northern operations manager Ray Burge said volunteer coastguard from Tutukaka were first on the scene and tried to resusitate the diver.

Emergency services were told of the accident at 7pm. The Northland rescue helicopter also responded but the man died before they arrived.

The coastguard rescue boat was now escorting the boat with the diver to Tutukaka where it will be met by officers.

Police will investigate on behalf of the coroner."

This is one of my worst nightmares - I feel for the guys family as well as the other people diving / on the boat that the time.

I'm still in shock from this news. Bruce was a truly great guy, and madly inn love with his wife. I can only imagine how she must be feeling. I know so many people who have done the Pacific Hideaway trips and I'm at a loss to understand how this happened.

The New Zealand Underwater Association (NZUA) sends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the recreational scuba diver who tragically died on February 8th from serious injuries after being struck by the propeller of a commercial dive boat as he surfaced near the Poor Knights Islands. It is understood that the police authority will conduct an investigation on behalf of the coroner.

The NZUA is deeply involved in the safety and wellbeing of recreational scuba divers, especially where there are boats involved and has produced guidelines (code of practice - http://www.charterguide.co.nz/nzuwac.htm) for both scuba divers and boat skippers. We work to make scuba diving an enjoyable and safe recreational pastime and it really hurts when accidents like this happen said Mike Percy who heads the NZUA Environmental Section.

I cant think of anything more relaxing, than being in the downunder, breathing some nice clean fresh filtered 21% nitrox.
