I could probably just cut and paste a Cameron_R response!!!

Welcome to NZ, welcome to Auckland and welcome to the forum! You might want to check out the Auckland University Underwater Club: http://akunidive.com/

7mm wetsuits are normal here, most people get through the winter in those. Summer should be no problem for you. You can always think about a drysuit for winter, it's the way forward.

I think there are a few spearos in the Auckland Uni club (check out Mazdaks videos):

If you want to have a crack at freediving and spearfishing visit the Ocean Hunter shop in Gaunt St. for advice and gear.

Dedicarted free-diving / spearfishing suits are different to the suits most people use for scuba diving. They are "open cell neoprene" on the inside (no lining so you need to lubricate them to get them on) and soft neoprene so that they are very flexible and comfortable - but also can compress more than most scuba suits.

They can be cheaper than a scuba suit but won't last as long as the neoprene is softer.

I use a A 5ml spearo suit in the winter and am in the water for up to 4 hrs at a time freediving and/or spearfishing - a little chilly by the end but not too bad.
