What a waste of a potentially good dive site

Most divers love 'em! Which ones, where, how deep?

What a waste of a potentially good dive site

Yeah 1700 MSW is deeper than I'm comfortable with..

You really notice it not being at the wharf.. Kinda miss the rusty piece of crap really as it had a cool profile..

Yeah, it was kinda a land mark hey

I am hoping that when they said

"After we towed it there we disconnected the tow line, put a couple of people on board, opened the scuttling valves and then watched it fill up and sink," Capt Pryce said."

that they remembered to get the people on board, off again :D

It costs a lot more to convert it into a safe dive-able wreck than tow it a few miles further and dump it in a trench.

Well there aren't a lot of options for these ships, the owners go broke and they end up sitting at a wharf for years, they get vandalised, people let go the lines so they become a hazard and it is the regional councils job to make them go away. It isn't a job they like but it gets lumped on them.

It costs about $30k to strip them and dump them in the trench which is the cheapest way for them to spend your rate payers money.

At any time in the last few years someone could have taken it off their hands and done something useful with it but lots of talk and no show.

Thats a great pity...also a pity that most people had no idea what it was actually doing at Miramar Wharf,I myself being a local thought that it was berthed there for PJ to use again in another movie.

Hell I know a lot of Welly divers that would have gone all out to fund-raise and make such a vessel into a dive site....and the group we have in Wellington could definitely be quite a force to be reckoned with..!!

I can't say at this stage other than have a look around the Wellington wharves for boats that haven't moved for a while.
I will let you know when I hear they have no owners.
