Lake Dives in NZ - Advice?

Postby DiverJared » Tue Dec 10, 2013 6:41 pm

Hi Folks,

I'm looking for some information on freshwater dives in the North Island of NZ.

I've heard rumors of a wreck in Lake Rotorua and a sunken Pa in Lake Okataina which I'd love to know more about. Any recommendations/must do's for fresh water dives in the North Island of NZ?

Any help/suggestions would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Jared

A quick scan in the trip reports section turned up these.

And of course there is Lake Pupuke. I haven't dived any of them except for the recent free-dive training in Lake Pupuke (although I can say that Pupuke is very dark at 40m - to the point you cannot see the dive line 1m away when the baseplate torch dies).

Have dived Taupo a few times, saw lots of catfish......and thats about it.
The first dive is interesting, the pumice makes it like a lunar surface, after that its a bit blah to be honest.
If you want to fresh water dive I can recommend a drift dive on the Waikato (remember to get out before Huka Falls, otherwise it can ruin your day)
You might want to talk to the cave boys, they probably have something to say about freshwater diving here.
