Sperm Whale in Rikoriko Cave

Postby tara » Mon Jun 28, 2010 12:48 pm

when we were up at the Poor Knights at the end of May, Rikoriko Cave was host to the carcass of a 15m sperm whale.
late June, the entrance to the cave is now hosting some of the bones of the great mammal.

There is a short video of the head bone - with Alexandria for size comparison - and I have some shots of it as well (but they are not all that great).

However, the bones are a pretty amazing addition to the sea floor.

mean! Anyone stolen the jaw yet? A mate of mine found one at the barrier and sold one side of it for $4,000.

Find a small 1 metre long dinosaur fossil and you get $400,000, especially if its from Oz/Nz. Dinosaur Fossils aren't worth as much if they are from North America or Asia for starters (unless a new species) due to being so common.
$8,000 is still a lot of money. Wonder if this could be a fringe benefit for Greenland now that it is allowed to start Whaling too? I was right in thinking that the recent Anti-Whaling efforts would be farsical to the point of utter embarressment.

Yeah sadly a Zeagle reg that I sent back was "stolen" out of a courier package en route to Auckland, and even though the guy signed for the "signature package" when he opened it later he discovered that it had been tampered with and that the octi was left in there but the Zeagle Flathead 7 1st and 2nd stage had been flogged...!!

So instead of claiming it on his insurance he gets Baycorp onto me... onto...ME..!!

Hence my interest as it most likely will only be #1 of #1 in NZ... they do look very similar to the Aqualung Legends though...(1st stages anyway).
