Is this any good or good to have or just pointless for washing/rinsing your gears?

No idea about salt off. But salt-away's active ingredient is sulfamic acid. Mind you, it is very diluted ( less than 5%) and then used diluted even more.
You can purchase it in a close to pure form hardware stores sold as lime scale remover ( cant think of the brand name).

Im unsure if it should be used to rinse down dive gear. I always use dihydrogen monoxide for that. Yes I am well aware of the many deaths caused every year by this chemical. I just make sure I am very careful to dilute it down with water first.
