Just in case our Mexico jaunt gets extended, April would give us our best chance to commit.

My friend Kathryn (who is a teacher) says:

"I am very interested. First week Feb is first week back at school so incredibly difficult to get time off then. Term one ends on Thursday 17th April in 2014, so if we could leave on Friday the 18th or later that would be ideal. Holidays last 2 weeks."

The booking is for 12th-19th (7 nights)

We could look at changing that but my first preference would be to leave it as it fits very well with my roster and would mean I would have to scratch around for extra leave.

Hi Ali, now that your Mexico jaunt has been extended how are you looking commitment wise for this trip?

I'm still really really keen. The booking is 12-19 April 2014 right?

Our last official appointment Mexico-way is a shark diving trip in the Bahamas in early March 2014 at this stage.

Cameron is a bit concerned about his work situation and the ability to get time off. They're really keen to get him back in NZ and the Fiordland trip is so soon after we would likely get back.

But I want to go! I miss NZ diving like crazy.

When do we need to put money down and have a firm commitment?

Well that'll suck if Cameron can't make it. But it's great you are still keen!

I'll be looking for $500 deposits in December.

Balance to be paid in Feb.

Cameron and I are now booked to arrive back in Auckland on 9th March 2014. So I'm still on track for this trip. Although I might need to sort some better thermal protection as I've gone soft since living with 25 degrees celsius in the Mexico caves. What are people using for drysuit undergarments these days? What water temperature can we expect in Fiordland?

Cameron won't have any holiday time. :-( So obviously I would only be doing this trip as a reccie on his behalf.

Hi Ali, Water temps will be around 8C in the fresh water layer and about 14 in the salt. The first trip I did there was around the same time but the last trip I did was in the middle of winter so quite a bit colder. I wore a weezle type thing and drygloves. But the drygloves were overkill perhaps.

Ta for the link, I'll have a listen when I get a chance.

Thanks that was an interesting listen. It's so true what they are saying about the intensity of the environmental gradient.

I have spent many minutes decoing and watching cray foraging close to the fresh layer and scuttling back down when a swell has brought the fresh down too close. So much going on in that environment.

Yes, the fresh water/salt water interface is an amazing place. I've seen catfish in the caves patrolling the boundary. They'll duck into the salt water for a brief time before returning to the fresh. It's funny to watch.

OK there are two spots left.

First in best dressed, deposits ($400) to be taken early Jan but if you're keen let me know now otherwise you'll miss out.
