Wreck Bay, Rangitoto

Postby Andy » Mon Nov 10, 2008 3:02 pm

I took a day off last week to head over to Rangitoto for a hike around and a look at the lava caves and so on. I was quite intrigued by the name of one of the bays on the island, "Wreck Bay".

Didn't actually make it around to the bay, but done a bit of digging around today - which is quite interesting. This photo was one of the first things I found;

There's a larger version here: http://asif.iblog.co.nz/photo/420/488

Also some information on the ARC website: http://www.arc.govt.nz/albany/index.cfm ... A4FACA0AE7

including this litlle snippet "The wrecks are best visited at low tide. The deeper wreckage just offshore attracts a variety of fish and other marine life and can be appreciated by snorkelling or scuba diving."

Anyone dived here? I'd be keen on taking some fins and a mask over sometime and doing some freediving on the old hulks.

I'd be keen to take a look, depending on whether I am around at the time, or stuck at work.
Sounds well worth checking out.

This week is out, staffing on an IDC every spare moment.... maybe next week? Might see if I can blag a boat and a skipper to save the two hour walk from the ferry wharf!

Definitely seems to warrant a boat trip rather than a ferry ride.

Just off the image you posted!

On this map, it's called Boulder Bay. It is a good couple of hours walk.

Andy, I think you need your eyes tested. Boulder Bay is clearly marked on the chart that I posted.
Thanks for clarifying the location though. :wink:

Thankfully worked out that old age is not leading to premature loss of eye sight..... just having web browser issues! Opera seems to truncate images that are wider than the container they are in!

That's my excuse, m'lud!

I was there 6 months or more ago on a boat. Plenty of old wrecks there, most if not all above the low tide line. Wouldnt consider it a dive site. Vis would usually be pretty poor.
