North Island Lake Dives

Aside from Lake Taupo (and the ever lovely Lake Pupuke) - where else can you lake dive in the North Island?

Has anyone dived Kai Iwi Lakes? Or Lake Karapiro?

It's a beautiful part of the country. Peaceful, lots of space - the lakes are HUGE. Apparently you can go quite deep, although we (Gregv and I) only went to 20m. Saw a few fresh water crays and then hopped out for a dusk buffet :D I would definitely dive there again - especially as they're relatively close to me.

Ali and I have dived lake Okatainia near Rotorua. It was pretty good. Heaps of Kura (spelling??). There was more plant life in the lake than those spots I've dived in Taupo.

Aparantely there is a submerged Pa. We didn't see it, we didn't even know where in the lake it is.

Kura is correct if you saw a "chief, or noted man of valour" in which case I'd suspect a touch of narcosis (or maybe a heavy slap of narcosis). Although I suspect you probably saw koura.

Lake Rotoma.
21 deg on the surface, wicked thermocline at 15 meters. 12 degs!
A bit of a wreck and heaps of Koura and unlike Taupo you can take them from there.

Some pics and stuff on the SODS site from when we did a club trip there.

There is always the Waikato river which isnt a lake of course but still a great dive before or after one in Taupo.
