Rotorua and lake rotama

Postby seynz » Mon Nov 30, 2009 8:56 pm

We go to Rotorua on Saturday, I would like to know the place to dive the "wreck" at lake Rotama, is it far from the shore, deep, any DOC restrictions ?
Any others dive site around , like lake Rotorua ?

Drive from Rotorua to Lake Rotoma. Go past the GAS station about 630 meters and there is a small car parking area on the left with a rocky out crop.
You can enter the water either side of the outcrop but the wreck is on the right hand side 20-30 meters out towards the centre in 10 meters or so of water.

Isnt that hard to find.

GPS 38 03.395 176 34.569 as best as I can tell from google earth.

No DOC restrictions. Plenty of Koura in there. No restrictions on gathering them except from (Lake Taupo) from what I have been told except for a limit of 50 shellfish which applies to Korua too.

Been this WE finally to the lake, I was really impressed by the viz, the water was crystal clear.
I started on the left to 33 meters deep and want back around the rocky point to the "wreck", it was easy to find. A cupples of pictures :

Found some barrels on the way to the boat, no idea what are they doing here and what for ?

A dive school from Roturua was there for training.

Will definatelly go back for more dives on the spot, because it s really different from others lakes I ve already dived before, even a 30 meters deep, you ve got a great viz.
Thanks Bob for the infos

I grew up not far away, we call that spot letterbox island and used to go swimming there a lot as teenagers, although I've never actually dived it. If anyone's keen to give it a go and wants a buddy in the area, Id be more than keen to give it a crack.
