Ramp permits I believe have different rules for different locations. If you are unsure talk to a local dairy or fishing store that is near the ramp you want to launch from and they will be sure to know, or be able to give you a copy of the ramp permits that have all the regulations written on them.

I ve been there already once and bought a permit. Not a lot of infos on the permit itself.
The dude at the dairy knew s...t about ramp permit, maybe more about indian curry...
It s not a matter of price ( under $ 10 ), it s to know more about how does it work.

Boat ramp permit

A current Lake Taupo boat ramp permit is required before using public launching ramps on the lake, but is not needed for lauching small craft from the beach. The permits are available for a day, a week or a year from fishing licence sellers. Regular checks are carried out at public boat ramps.

From http://www.nzfishing.com/regulations/Re ... sTaupo.htm

If it fits in your boot you can probably launch it off a beach.
But to be sure phone the local Coastguard. Im sure you are a member aye. At only $97 its cheap.... http://www.taupocoastguard.co.nz/

A response from the Taupocostguard :

"If you do not use a vehicle on the boat ramp you are not required to purchase a ramp permit, enjoy and remember safety first"

Might be worth considering the beach after they put the price up considerably this season!! :( It's gone from $51 to $113 for a year.. which is a pretty considerable jump!
