Why we love Goat Island

Postby Crayfish » Thu Nov 10, 2011 10:35 am

I thought I would get the ball rolling as we come into summer with a new topic why we love Goat Island. In my opinion New Zealand’s best shore dive. :D

Finally made it back into the water at Goat island, I've been seriously missing in action this year. Some images from a dawn raid this morning.

Yes it wasn't too bad, about 8-10m. A bit sandy in the shallows but better below 5m out of the wave action. There's less chain salps about than earlier in the week.

I love GI too.I spend there some of my best life movements there when we were on trip.Unfortunately my friend Alex got severe backache and we were unable to mange a better quality foam mattress as per requirement of his conditions. That,s made me very sad.Anyhow its just a sharing and thanks to all here for some beautiful stuff.

I just wanted to have a little rant here. I certified in the beginning of 1988, after being an avid child snorkeller at Goat Island for as long as I can remember (we had a bach at Leigh). I got to know Goat Island very very well for at least a decade and a half. This is the place that made me want to become a marine biologist. At that point life changed and I didn't really get to go back very often.

After living overseas for several years I returned to GI in 2007. I was APPALLED and severely disappointed at the barrenness of the environment, and the COMPLETE lack of fish. Bear in mind I had seen GI in its "glory days" when people were still allowed to feed the fish, and it was a tremendously rich and vibrant place to experience a great diversity of fish life.

Now it is just somewhat of a wasteland, a "ghost town" of what was once a thrilling place to enjoy as youngster.

Very very sad. Does anyone else feel the same way?

Bear in mind I haven't been back since, so perhaps it is getting better again?

PS There's some very interesting info on the seafriends website on what has happened to this (once) special place. (http://www.seafriends.org.nz/issues/cons/lessons.htm)
