Leigh and the Poor Knights - who to dive with?

Postby AndrewRawlingson » Mon Sep 10, 2012 12:23 pm

I have a cylinder and some lead to go with the mountain of dive kit I brought over from the UK. Living in Auckland, I imagine the most accessible sea diving is out of Leigh and then there is the Poor Knights which is further away, but worth the effort if what I hear is to be believed. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Any recommendations for boat operators/charters for these locations? Would prefer hard boats, rather than inflatables. Thanks.

Try Goat Island Dive for Leigh.
Poor Knights has heaps of charters. I'd recommend a 2 day livaboard. One day isnt enough and doing 2 one day trips will cost you more than a weekend liveaboard.
Pacific Hideaway or Ocean blue/Mazurka are two that spring to mind.

Dont overlook Northland Dive who operate out of Bay Of Islands. They do use RIB's however but the diving is great, its very well priced and the social aspect is second to none.

I really like diving out of those RIBs. Sure the gear up for CCR is a little trickier but not too bad IMHO.

As do I.
The down side to RIB's are they are wet boats. Not a problem for most divers.... but my boat b i t c h got a bit cold and wet last time we went out. I think he got over it once his scallops were sizzling.

Mazurka now has Nitrox as well!!!! Makes them even more appealing to me.

Never been out with any commercial operator from Leigh. We take the club boat out there very frequently:

(not just for students either)

+1 for Northland Dive

I cant think of anything more relaxing, than being in the downunder, breathing some nice clean fresh filtered 21% nitrox.
