Advance OW certification in Auckland/Northland

Postby ilteo86 » Tue Jul 07, 2015 4:43 pm

Hi all,

I am an open water diver with about 20 dives experience, and I'd really like to dive in new zealand in the auckland/northland area, and possibly get an advance ow certificate.
I am from Italy and I haven't been much time in the country, so I don't really know which are the best and cheapest divings and/or diving schools.
Just by giving a quick look on the internet I see it is generally quite expensive and there is really a big difference between different places, so I could really do with some advice!

Thanks

Matteo

I haven't done a SCUBA course for quite a while (I am focused on freediving now - sold my tanks) but I have heard good things about Shane an Julia who run Northland Dive in the Bay of Islands. (I have stayed there once - it is well set up for SCUBA divers).

You could combine a dive trip with the AOW course and probably get to dive the wreck of the ex-Navy Frigate Canterbury (or the wreck of the Rainbow Warrior). Northland Dive run courses. It almost gives you the benefits of a live aboard ...

Here is a link to their website: http://www.northlanddive.com/

And also a couple of shortish videos I put together from freedives on the Canterbury and Rainbow Warrior to wet your appetite.
Canterbury: https://youtu.be/2U9AUxT0hz0
Rainbow Warrior: https://youtu.be/a03IP-4H4J0 (the visibility was not good for the Rainbow Warrior - I have had a lot better vis there.)

Thank you very much for your reply! is there any way I can find a club that offers advanced open water certifications for less than 500$?

If you can it will be at the Auckland University Underwater Club - they search out the best deals. You don't have to be a student to be a member.

Here is a link to the Auckland University Underwater Club AOW page: http://akunidive.com/padi-advanced-open-water/

$545 and likely including accommodation / food (if 8 or more are on the course - from what I read on the page ...

Google turned up a course for $495 but I would imagine any accommodation is on top of this? (Looks like they dive the wreck of the Waikato which would probably mean at least a nights accommodation if you are Auckland based). http://kiwiscubadivers.co.nz/advanced-open-water-course.php

And for comparison there is Goat Island Dives AOW (again I found this via Google search) http://www.goatislanddive.co.nz/advanced-open-water-course $549 but if you live in Auckland then there shouldn't be accommodation costs.

Personally, if I were in your shoes I would be considering Northland Dive through the Auckland University Underwater Club. AUUC has a history of being cost focused (what students aren't?) and having a lot of fun at the same time.

(Disclaimer: I was heavily involved in the AUUC in the '80s and president in 1988 so I may have a slight bias ;) )
